Many Christians see church as a place to receive rather than a place to serve. They attend services, listen to sermons, and benefit from the prayers of others—but never contribute to the work of the ministry.
However, God never called us to be spectators. The Bible says:
“Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.” — 1 Corinthians 12:27
Every believer has a role in strengthening the church and advancing God’s kingdom. Just as every organ in the body has a function, every Christian is gifted for a purpose (Romans 12:4-8). When some members refuse to function, the church becomes spiritually weak.
This article will show you how to move from being a passive churchgoer to an active, deliberate Christian who strengthens the body of Christ and glorifies God through service.
Many Christians today join churches for blessings but neglect their responsibility to serve. Instead of contributing to God’s work, they remain passive receivers. The Bible warns against this mindset:
It is more blessed to give than to receive.” — Acts 20:35
Every believer has a unique role in the body of Christ (Romans 12:4-8). A healthy church thrives when its members actively serve. But when members remain passive, the church suffers—just as a body weakens when an organ stops functioning.
Ministry success is not the pastor’s job alone. Without strong support, even the most anointed leaders struggle. Consider the battle between Israel and Amalek in Exodus 17:
Lesson: Your pastor’s success in ministry affects your spiritual victories. Instead of complaining, offer support—whether through prayer, giving, or volunteering.
The Shunammite woman noticed that Prophet Elisha lacked a resting place. Without being asked, she prepared a room for him (2 Kings 4:9-10). Her act of service led to a divine reward—a long-awaited child.
Lesson: When you serve God’s ministers, God meets your own needs in unexpected ways.
✅ Pray for your pastor and ministry team.
✅ Volunteer in any area where help is needed.
✅ Give generously to support the church’s mission.
✅ Encourage your leaders instead of criticizing them.
Paul describes the church as a body with many parts (1 Corinthians 12:12-27). Just as every organ has a function, so does every believer.
“If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? … God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.” — 1 Corinthians 12:17-18
Even those who desire to serve face hindrances. These may include:
However, several Bible characters overcame obstacles to fulfill their purpose:
Lesson: Don’t let obstacles stop you from fulfilling God’s call in your church.
✅ Engage in church activities—don’t just be a Sunday Christian.
✅ Help your pastor like Aaron and Hur did for Moses.
✅ Volunteer in an area where your gifts can shine.
✅ Pray consistently for your church and its leadership.
✅ Encourage other believers and build a culture of service.
The church belongs to Christ, not the pastor (Ephesians 5:23). We are all laborers in our Father’s vineyard. If you haven’t identified your role yet, ask God today. The more deliberately we serve, the more Christ is glorified in and through us.
